Short Story Competition PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 01 February 2010

Who is your favourite author? J.K Rowling..? Dan Brown? Stephanie Meyer? Few of you would have a Muslim author’s name pop into your head at that question.  So when we, at ISocNews, heard of an initiative to encourage Muslims to write, we knew we had to find out more.

The Muslim Youth Helpline are running a new and innovative short story competition for young people in association with the Muslim Writers Awards.

The subject of relationships, in its widest sense, presents important challenges in the Muslim community, and to centre on this, the competition invites entrants to write a short story reinterpreting 'Romeo & Juliet' from the perspective of a young British Muslim.

So why not turn those endless thoughts of relationships into something more and give yourself the chance to win up to £400 in cash and be recognised by established authors?

The competition will be run through a network of schools, colleges and universities, in collaboration with the Muslim Writers Awards. Prizes will include cash and an opportunity for talented young writers to be mentored by established authors and publishers (tbc).

The judges have been confirmed as: David Godwin, literary agent, Sarah Joseph, editor of emel magazine, and Shelina Zahra Janmohamed, author of Love in a Headscarf. The deadline for submitting your entry is February 26th.

So, if you’re a budding young writer but don’t know where to start, or just someone interested in sharing their story, its time...write now!

couldnt there be a more serious issue to write about...i mean what a waste of time to write about something so meaningless and far removed from a Muslims life.

im even tempted to say that its somekind of set up to corrupt and delude the minds of Muslims students away from their real purpose.

its just my opinion.

how are relationships so far removed from a muslims life..? if anything, this could enable young muslims to educate others through their writing, they have to start somewhere and through writing we can pass on knowledge ideas etc.

this is hardly corrupting the minds of muslim students, the environment we live in on the other hand...

There is a huge difference between words/virtual and reality, maybe the competition will help the students explore in words and learn from a subject matter that will not have a basis in their reality, sweeping taboo subject matters under the carpet has no effect, rather a guided and firm stance of learning makes a lot of difference.
Combat ignorance with guided knowledge.

On the other hand, there are more important things in life...by the time you read this on average two children would have died, and the bombs are still falling on innocent lives, while romeo and juliet are still lost in self-absorbed tale.
